Pumpkins for Pigs!

By Seher Talukdar

Now that holidays like Halloween, and soon Thanksgiving, are coming to a close, many neighborhoods throughout West Windsor are struggling about what to do with their old decorations. Scarecrows and string lights can go back in their boxes but what about pumpkins? While it’s pretty common to buy a couple for the front porch, it’s also unfortunately common to trash them in a matter of weeks. But it’s not like there’s anything better right? Well Pumpkins-For-Pigs has found the perfect solution!

Instead of sending off perfectly fine pumpkins into landfills, locations around the area are now taking uncarved and unpainted pumpkins to their farms as pigs and goats enjoy snacking on them. One such location is in Skillman, NJ, but any other local farmers can be contacted to ask if they will accept pumpkin donations. The pumpkinsforpigs.org website further explains their mission and offers several options for donating along with a map of all locations accepting them. Pumpkins can be gathered and dropped off anywhere from October to mid-December, effectively saving landfill overflow and supporting hungry animals all throughout the holiday season!

Work with your neighbors, HOA and local agricultural workers today to make the holidays so much more special!
